The High Perch of Forgotten Promises

Two birds find their habit of mocking the world below tested by a forgotten vow.

High above the rooftop garden city, Ketzal and Toci watch the world. They find humor in the smallest movements of the people below, distancing themselves through laughter and sharp wit.

It is their favorite game. They pick apart the struggles of the citizens, feeling superior in their detachment. They believe that staying high above keeps them safe from life’s messy complications.

But a memory stirs. Years ago, they made a promise to a gardener below, a vow to guard a rare seed that would bloom only if a bird delivered a specific song of rain.

The seed is fading now, and the promise feels heavier than the air they fly through. If they do not descend to help, they will lose the very beauty they once ignored.

Ketzal suggests they fly down, but Toci hesitates. To descend is to risk being seen, being vulnerable, and leaving behind the safety of their cold, distant humor.

They realize that by mocking the world, they have forgotten how to be part of it. The path down is narrow, steep, and lined with the consequences of their long silence.

As they reach the garden gate, a mysterious figure steps from the shadows, blocking their path. They realize the promise was a trap, and the true challenge has only just begun.
